Where are the metals from your mobile, computer and TV? All consumers do not think that modern electronics contain many unusual elements that need to be extracted somewhere, and that some such extraction takes place in conflict zones like eastern Congo.
You may have seen the movie Blood Diamond, which deals with conflict diamond diamonds. In eastern Congo, far worse attacks on the civilian population are taking place, and yet companies and military groups get a chance to extract cobalt and tantalum.
A report by Enough Project examines 20 of the world's largest companies and ranks them from outside how well they avoid conflict minerals in products. Apple gets by far the highest score, 122 out of 125 possible. Only Alphabet / Google comes close with 102.5. In third place we find HP with 76. Sony only receives 33.5, Samsung 17.5 and Toshiba barely scores with 9 out of 125.
