Since 2014, when Apple acquired Luxvue, which worked with microled technology, the company has had a development lab in Taiwan who has been working on technology. Microled is a technology that is expected to replace Oled within a few years, and it has been rumored that Apple can start using it in its smallest product, Apple Watch, already in 2018.

Digitimes now reports that Apple has scaled down its business in Taiwan after the developers had problems making the technology scalable for mass production.

Apple claims, however, working with TSMC on an alternative solution where the current bottleneck disappears from the image by using silicon backing to the screen panels. In addition, it may be that the development in the lab simply reached a milestone and that Apple will continue development at home in Cupertino instead.
